Animal Stories That Will Make You Smile

These NFL Players Love Their Pets

The Eric and Jessie Decker Foundation, Inc.

What are the words that spring to your mind when you hear someone talk about professional football players?

Well, I think words such as tough, mean, sturdy and ruthless would make it to the top of anybody’s list. To be honest, they certainly make it to mine! We watch these guys in ‘action’ touching it out on the field every weekend and quite naturally form a mental picture of every one of them being, well, ruthless, to say the least. So, it would be quite surprising, almost shocking, when I tell you that there is a soft side to this ruthlessness that we associate with almost every pro football player.

Do we know that most of the professional football players share a common love – the love for their pets? Almost every one of us is keen to discuss every game of professional football in great detail. We are just as keen to know and talk about all the renowned football players and about their personal lives, tastes, likes and dislikes etc. but I wonder how many of us have actually, ever, talked about how much warmth, love, care and compassion do so many of pro football players show towards their pets. I bet not many!

Pet lovers, in general, are well aware of the animal-human bond and the pet animals’ inherent quality of reciprocating by giving back many times the love that they receive from their human companions or owners. But would you believe me when I tell you that:

  • Baltimore Raverns centre Jeremy Zuttah chose his pit bull, Ace, as his groomsman;

  • Tyrann Mathieu teamed up with PETA and locked himself in his car with outside temperature around 90-degree to exemplify the kind of torture pets undergo when their owners lock them in their cars and go shopping;

  • Atlanta Falcons’ Tony Gonzalez stripped down for PETA to drive people away from wearing fur.

I bet that you won’t believe most of what I have highlighted above.

Well, trust me, all of it is true.

The relationships that these rough and tough guys have with their pets portray a completely different side of their personality and one that we all can learn from. After all, these guys are true role models and they do epitomize true love for animals.
